Peanuts are the most common cause of death due to an allergic reaction. It is the severity of the reaction to peanuts that is so alarming and there is no cure. The only way to prevent a reaction is to avoid contact with peanuts and all foods containing peanuts. This is difficult since even the smell of peanuts can cause a reaction in many cases.
Young children with this allergy leave there homes every day facing incredible danger and parents are left with the worry that they may never see their child again, simply because there child may come into contact with peanuts. Young children are at great risk because they often lack the capacity to take the precautions necessary to avoid peanuts and are incapable of administering the necessary medication to save their lives. The lives of these children suffering a life threatening allergy are left in the hands of professional adults. These adults are teachers and school administrators. What is the problem? Risk is heightened when the adults do not take peanut allergy seriously, the most deadly of all allergies, and brush it of, as just another allergy. The NYC school system must increase awareness to this allergy and make real efforts to create peanut free schools. This would be a humane effort to save the lives of children.
